Why is New Hampshire Considered One of the Best States for Education? | Free State Project

When it comes to teaching young people, many experts see New Hampshire as one of the best states for education.

But why?

In a word, innovation! Thanks to legislative advances in recent years, New Hampshire is now on the cutting edge of educational options, leapfrogging much larger states that have bloated bureaucracies.

Freedom to Homeschool

Due to the popularity of homeschooling as well as dissatisfaction with government schools in New Hampshire, more co-ops and learning centers are opening! Two notable examples of these types of fusion programs include Latitude Learning Resources in Manchester and Big Fish Learning Community in Dover.

Homeschoolers in New Hampshire have a lot of freedom. Families can begin a homeschool program at any time, even in the middle of the school year.

There are three requirements:

  1. Report intent to homeschool once per child (not once per year!). The Granite State Home Educators (GSHE) provide a sample Letter of Intent to be sent to the local School Administrative Unit (SAU) district office, a private school that offers the service, or the state Department of Education.
  2. Keep a portfolio of the child’s work.
  3. Conduct some kind of annual year-end assessment,

But that simple process is only the beginning of the good news!

While our state definitely has a Don’t Tread on Me style, you won’t feel alone when homeschooling. Accordingly, parents of homeschool kids can receive guidance from GSHE, which maintains a list of learning centers, co-ops, and support groups. Additionally, GSE will help show you how to start homeschooling your kids.

Private School Options

Sadly, in some states, private schools are being restricted and even closing. Meanwhile, in New Hampshire, new private schools are opening and thriving!

A new Catholic school just opened in the North Country. Acton Academy opened their doors in the Lakes Region. And Chesterbrook School of Natural Learning has recently expanded to include primary grades.

Without a doubt, it’s an exciting time for private schools in New Hampshire!

Moreover, school choice gives parents diverse options for private schools – from elite prep to nature-based. The NH Department of Education has an up-to-date list of all private schools. Still better, Niche will show you how to find and compare schools in New Hampshire.

Plus, as you’ll learn below, New Hampshire has the only Education Tax Credit program in the country that extends to homeschoolers!

Why Has NH Education Been Made More Affordable?

For many years, Free Stater activists have been working hard to make private schools and homeschooling more accessible and affordable, especially for those young people who need it most of all.

As a result, the Granite State now has two education choice programs:

How does the Education Tax Credit Scholarship Program (ETC) work?

Businesses and individuals can make donations to scholarships and receive the highest tax credit available in the state – an 85% Education Tax Credit. Donors can apply the credit against their NH Business Profits Tax, Business Enterprise Tax, or Interest and Dividends Tax.

In turn, these donations provide scholarships to low- and moderate-income children for tuition at a private school, online school, courses, or even for homeschooling expenses!

Are you starting to see why New Hampshire is one of the best states for education? We hope so!

Beyond any doubt, the undisputed, #1 source related to this program is Children’s Scholarship Fund NH (CSFNH). On the CSFNH website, students and parents will find more information, as well as the scholarship application. To fund this program, businesses and individuals can learn how to contribute and apply the tax credits.

Of course, if you have any questions about scholarships or tax credits related to New Hampshire’s ETC program, you can always contact CSFNH.

Charter School Choices

To increase competition, more charter schools are opening across NH! All of the state’s 29 charter schools are non-profit, tuition-free public schools. They accept students by open enrollment and are only limited by available seats. More charter schools will soon open since NH accepted a $46M grant from the federal government in December 2020.

In New Hampshire, charter schools are not restricted by zip codes and many have unique educational approaches. The Granite State also boasts a diverse list of charter schools to choose from, including the online, Virtual Learning Academy Charter School (for all ages); a Montessori School; a nationally ranked Academy of Science and Design STEM middle and high school in Nashua; and a school dedicated to the arts.

To explain more, the NH Alliance for Public Charter Schools has additional information and a map of all NH Charter Schools.
